There are so many things to like about this picture. The first thing which drew me to it was the title: “Le verre de l’amitié”. Which translates to English as: “A glass of friendship“. A glass of friendship! Isn’t that exactly what you should be doing when you are enjoying a glass of wine? Sharing it with friends? In true Swiss efficiency, the title says it all.

I roughly translated the text from the notrehistiore.ch site that describes the picture.

There is one tradition in some very tough Valaisan villages, it is the opening of the cave bourgeoisiale to share a glass of wine and discuss the latest news of the village. Any occasion is good to drink the wine of the citizens, especially after chores.

But who are these folks in the picture?

From left to right: Henry Bridge – Edward Bridge – Remy Salamin – Marcel Salamin – Fridolin Martin – Roger Salamin.

Again, this magnificent photograph comes to us compliments of the even more awesome website: notrehistoire.ch.

NotreHistoire.ch is a site “…whose purpose is draw together with other users, a mural with images and sounds in the history of Western Switzerland and contribute to the illustration of a social and cultural history of our region.” It is a pretty ambitious website, but full of extremely bits and bytes of social history of Switzerland.
